How We Tested
Each tool was tested on the same 40 AI-generated documents — a mix of academic essays, blog posts, marketing copy, and professional emails — generated by GPT-4, Claude 3.5, and Gemini 1.5.
We ran every output through three detectors: GPTZero, Turnitin, and Originality.ai. We scored each tool on:
- Pass rate — Percentage of outputs scoring below the human threshold on all three detectors
- Meaning preservation — Whether the original point survived the rewrite
- Readability — Whether the output was actually pleasant to read
- Speed — Time to process 500 words
- Free tier — What you get without paying

Pass rate: 91% | Free tier: 100 words/request

2. Undetectable.ai — Strong Detection Bypass, Weaker Readability
Pass rate: 87% | Free tier: Limited preview only
Undetectable is the best-known name in this space and earns its reputation on detection bypass. The output passes most detectors reliably. The tradeoff: the rewriting occasionally produces stiff, unnatural phrasing that reads like a thesaurus was over-applied.
Good for: Situations where detection bypass is the only priority and you'll do a polish pass yourself. Not ideal for: Content that needs to sound natural without editing.
3. Quillbot — Best for Paraphrasing, Not True Humanization
Pass rate: 62% | Free tier: Generous word limit
Quillbot is excellent at paraphrasing — but paraphrasing is not humanization. It changes vocabulary and occasionally restructures sentences, but it doesn't address the underlying perplexity problem. In our tests, 62% of outputs passed all three detectors — significantly below the leading tools.
Good for: Improving clarity and reducing verbosity. Not ideal for: Bypassing AI detectors reliably.
4. Humanize AI — Decent Mid-Range Option
Pass rate: 79% | Free tier: 50 words
Humanize AI sits comfortably in the mid-tier. Pass rates were consistent, and the output was readable. The interface is simple and fast. The main limitation is the 50-word free tier, which makes it hard to evaluate quality before paying.
5. BypassGPT — Good Originality.ai Performance, Weaker on Turnitin
Pass rate: 74% | Free tier: 250 words
BypassGPT performed well against Originality.ai specifically but struggled more with Turnitin's detection model. If your concern is content marketing platforms rather than academic submissions, it's a solid option. For Turnitin specifically, results were inconsistent.
6. StealthGPT — High Claims, Mixed Results
Pass rate: 68% | Free tier: None
StealthGPT markets itself aggressively as undetectable. Our testing found pass rates of around 68% — respectable, but short of its marketing. No free tier makes it difficult to test without committing.
7. WriteHuman — Straightforward, Limited Power
Pass rate: 61% | Free tier: 100 words
WriteHuman is easy to use but our testing found it produced the lowest structural variance of the tools we tested. The rewriting felt surface-level — essentially synonym replacement plus some light sentence restructuring. Reliable for low-stakes content, not for Turnitin submissions.

What to Look For in an AI Humanizer
Detection bypass rate is the primary metric — but check which detectors a tool is tested against. Some tools optimise specifically for GPTZero while performing poorly on Turnitin.
Look for a built-in detector. The best workflow is: detect → humanize → detect again. Tools that require you to bounce between tabs slow you down and introduce copy-paste errors.
Meaning preservation matters. A rewrite that changes your argument or introduces factual errors is worse than the original.
Free tiers matter for evaluation. You can't judge output quality from a marketing page. Any tool worth using should let you test before you pay.
